CEC members Dominic Stucker and Frits Hesselink report on the matching of CEC members and youth from international groups. This model for "intergenerational partnership" is of value and merits continuation, their evaluation finds.
Intergenerational Partnership for Sustainability We are pleased to share with you our report on the "Buddy Experiment" that paired 80 young people with 80 members of IUCN CEC, the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Commission on Education and Communication, for six months earlier this year. Youth were invited from the Earth Charter Youth Initiative, Global Youth Action Network, TakingItGlobal, Peace Child International, Peace Child Peru, Youth Action for Change, and UNEP's South Asia Youth Environment Network. The experiment was inspired in November 2007 by the concept of "intergenerational partnership for sustainability" and participant ideas during an Earth Charter-led workshop at the 4th International Conference on Environment Education in Ahmedabad, India. Frits Hesselink and Dominic Stucker planned and coordinated the Buddy Experiment. Frits is from HECT Consultancy and Dominic is from Earth Charter; Frits is a long-time CEC member and Dominic was invited to join the CEC during the Buddy Experiment. Frits and Dominic remain good "Buddies!" The following report, based on an online evaluation completed by particpants, illustrates that the Buddy concept is valuable and should be further developed and supported. It is envisioned to expand the Buddy Experiment to all of IUCN's six Commissions. Thanks to all those - especially the participants - who made the Buddy Experiment possible.
