This document is based on a questionnaire developed by communication experts from government and private sector in the Netherlands, distributed in February 2003. With a 50% response rate from a wide range of geographical areas, the group performed a qualitative analysis which forms the basis of this final text.
The results include a realisation that nature conservation, sustainable development and the environment are not one of the top three major public concerns and often do not feature in the ten most pressing concerns; that it is often submerged within other areas of concern for example health or poverty reduction; that nature conservation is not a ‘mainstream issue’ for Ministries other than the one responsible for the environment.
